Specialized Certificates and Required Courses
There are two ways to earn a Specialized Certificate:
- KCPC graduates who have earned a Diploma only have to take 4 additional courses to earn a specialized Certificate in an area of interest.
- An applicant who hasn’t completed a KCPC Diploma is required to complete the 9 courses in the areas of competency required for each Certificate.

SPECIALIZED CERTIFICATE IN SEX AND INTIMACY COUNSELLING required courses:

- Treatments for Depression and Anxiety Disorders
- Introduction to Couples Counselling

- Culture, Sex, and Intimacy
- Sex and Intimacy Counselling
- Treating Symptoms of Sexual Dysfunction
NOTE: Graduates of KCPC’s Diploma program are only required to complete the following four specialized courses to earn the Sex and Intimacy Counselling Certificate:
- Understanding Human Sexuality
- Culture, Sex, and Intimacy
- Sex and Intimacy Counselling
- Treating Symptoms of Sexual Dysfunction
SPECIALIZED CERTIFICATE IN THE PRACTICE OF PSYCHOTHERAPY required courses:
- Introduction to Applied Psychology and Ethics, or equivalent
- Assessment of Psychological Disorders
- Applied Counselling Skills I
- Theory and Practice of Psychotherapy, I & II (two part course)
- Evidence-based Treatment and Psychopharmacology, I & II (two part course)
- Challenges of Clinical Practice, I & II (two part course)
(Note: students must register for both parts of the two-part courses)
SPECIALIZED CERTIFICATE IN COUNSELLING THERAPY
Graduates of KCPC’s Diploma program can complete the following four courses to earn a Specialized Certificate in Counselling Therapy:
- Multi-Cultural Competence
- Introduction to Clinical Psychopharmacology
- Challenges of Clinical Practice I
- Challenges of Clinical Practice II
Customized Certificate: 5 Required Courses
5 Required core courses for a Customized Certificate:
- Introduction to Applied Psychology and Ethics, or Ethics and Career Development
- Assessment of Psychological Disorders
- Conflict, Suicide, and Emergency Interventions
- Application of Personality Theories
- Applied Counselling Skills I ( Case Management, Assessment and Listening Skills )
Plus choose 4 additional electives.
SPECIALIZED CERTIFICATE FOR E-COUNSELLING required courses:
NOTE: Graduates of KCPC’s Diploma program can complete the following courses to earn a Customized Certificate in e-Counselling.

SPECIALIZED CERTIFICATE FOR ADDICTION COUNSELLING required courses:
(Applicants without clinical experience or training as a men tal health practitioner may be required to complete additional coursework to meet the pre-requisites for this Certificate.)
Nine (9) courses are required:
- Introduction to Applied Psychology and Ethics
- Applied Counselling Skills (ACS I-400)
- Applied Counselling Skills (ACS II-400)
- Addictions and Recovery
- Conflict, Suicide and Emergency Interventions
- Group Dynamics and Workshop Design
- Introduction to Clinical Psychopharmacology
- Comprehensive Treatment of Addictions, (CTA I&II-600) (2-part course)
While completing the coursework at KCPC, students are required to volunteer or work in a mental health setting for 15 hours per month.
